Designing Thematic Instruction –Tuesday March 20, 6:00 pm (EDT)


Presenter: Angelika Becker
Learn more about designing your own teaching units starting with level 1 and expanding them to be used all the way to levels 4 and AP! Understand the concepts of backward design, the planning of formative and summative assessments and essential questions. The presenter will share ideas and strategies to help make backward design work for you, share rubrics for formative and summative assessments and help with resources and teaching strategies for differentiation.

Presenter: Mohamed Esa
Songs by Die Prinzen, the Wise Guys, Bettina Wegner, Frank Zander, Rammstein and Rolf Zuckowski are highly motivating for students and form the basis for this webinar on how to effectively use music in German instruction. Songs and video can be used to improve language proficiencies in all students. Music that is appropriate for teaching various themes will be introduced and multiple ways to use them will be presented. This webinar will be presented in German.

Learn about Swiss history and contemporary Swiss life, politics, and culture. Particular attention will be paid to current hot button issues including migration. Get acquainted with Swiss literature, music, web resources, and films that can easily be integrated into high school and college German courses!
Presenter: Karin Baumgartner is Associate Professor of German at the University of Utah where she teaches German language and literature at all levels. She is the editor of the book From Multiculturalism to Cultural Hybridity: New Approaches to Teaching Modern Switzerland (2010). She is the author of " ’Ich kam unter die Schweizer.’ Teaching Switzerland as a Multi-Ethnic Society.” Die Unterrichtspraxis/Teaching German (Fall 2012). She is a member of the AATG Executive board and was a co-chair of the AATG/ACTFL conference in 2009.
