German Task Force Meeting
Friday,
April 20th from 4:00 to 5:30 pm
Attending:
C. Gonzales, A. Holder, K. Miskin, J. Packer, Gegg Roberts, Melanie
Sherwook, L.C. Smith, S. Van Orden, Johanna Watzinger-Tharp
Meeting
summary with updates.
1.
German Immersion at charter schools
We
will look into the possibility of a charter school offering German
immersion, which would require business funding.
[Update:
Johanna meeting with business community members on May 24th
to discuss funding possibilities.]
2.
Activities to strengthen German at the secondary level
With
German immersion cancelled this year, we discussed how to focus our
efforts on German secondary programs.
-
Organize intensive summer camps at BYU
Model
German camps after those held for French under the direction of Rob
Erickson.
[Update:
Johanna is in touch with Rob, and Laura is facilitating communication
with Michelle James, chair of German at BYU about organizing a camp
in 2013. We are looking into combining a German language camp with
soccer, possibly with the support of a program funded by the German
Auswärtiges Amt.)
-
Promote German as a “third” language in high school
While
Junior HS programs have to be aligned with immersion languages (see
attached curriculum sequence), high schools do not. However,
districts do not understand that non-immersion languages such as
German will still have a place. Gregg and others have to clarify that
the immersion languages will impact middle school, but not HS
curricula. Once students will complete their immersion study with AP
in 9th grade, high schools should offer non-immersion
languages to students who seek to acquire a second foreign language.
-
Use UFLA as a vehicle to disseminate information about the immersion
sequence, and the opportunity for German; organize an immersion
information session at UFLA that also discusses the place of
non-immersion languages such as German.
[Update:
Johanna is communicating with various people who are so-called
“Fachberater” to seek support and funding, and is now a member of
the Netzwerk Sprachvergnügen, to which the Fachberater belong as
well.]
3.
Other news
-
Jake Sigafus will teach German 3 at Timpanogos HS, which will perhaps
help revive German there. The level 3 students all had German 1 and 2
with Jake at Orem Jr. HS. Alta HS currently without a German teacher,
and not advertising the position.
-
German at Corner Canyon HS (which will start in Fall 2013) still
supported by the principal, Mary Bailey. We need to secure district
level support.
