Subject: Harvest Festival & Sustainability Stuff...
Late
evening everyone!
I
just want everyone to know that this Thursday there will be a Harvest
Festival at the original community garden from 11am-1pm. Please tell
your circle of influence about the festival and come on out! I'm
having my Regional Geography course come out for the event.
Now
as for the next Sustainability Committee Meeting, it will be in mid
October. There are some things happening lately with the committee
that I would like determined and that is why we have not met yet. But
just because the entire group has not met doesn't mean things haven't
been happening.
- The community garden received a $10,000 grant late last spring from Grainger and is working on a $25,000 grant from Lowes (thanks Kevin Rusch)! The first garden had some updates and there is now a new garden by the Child Care Center. If we get the Lowes money, we hope to add gardens at Jordan Campus and South City Campus. In the coming weeks the gardens will have compost bins and the second garden will have a Tuff Shed and greenhouse.
- Rand Webb has already hosted his first Recycling Committee for this academic year and is gearing up for Recyclemania and some other events. Nicely done Rand!
- Sounds like some great things are coming out of the Green Academy and Mary Jane Keleher is working on a new AS degree in Environmental Science. The new introductory course for the Sustainability Certificate is going great with guest lectures from a variety of people on this committee including Jane Drexler, Howard, Ingle, and myself.
- And now we have a Harvest Festival going on thanks in large part to Clint Gardner, Paul Michniewicz, Trina Frandsen, and Kati Lewis. Attached is the flyer created by Kati for the festival. Please post it around where you can and in Blackboard or Canvas if you use it. Or even email your classes and departments about the festival.
So
like I said, things are happening at the college! In the coming days
I will send out a meeting request for our next meeting in October and
it will likely be on a Friday again. I'm so proud of everything that
is going on with sustainability at so many different levels and some
aspects like recycling and the community garden have taken a life on
it's own. So before we meet again, PLEASE start thinking of new and
innovative ways to move forward as a committee. There is no need to
meet if we just rehash the same old "stuff." So start
thinking of new and innovative things we could be doing so we stay
lively! With that all said, I hope you are all doing well and hanging
in there!
